Post Traumatic Stress Disorder....
"This "disease" has been plaguing humanity from the beginning of time, and even though it has taken the lives of millions and torn other's existences to shreds, why it hasn't been studied, highlighted and more effort put in to finding answers, is beyond my ability to comprehend. PTSD is a reality and we need to consider it one of the contributing factors which can lead to emotional health issues such as Anxiety Disorders, Panic Attacks, and in some cases, suicide. As well, the Surgeon General has stated emotional/mental illnesses are a leading contributor to physical illnesses."
Debbie Spicer, RN June 2002
Finding this illness to be my own reality, I have a desire is to discuss, find answers, and give information which I have found in facing this journey with PTSD in my own life. I will research everything I can find about any disabiling condition, and being in the medical field, it is even more essential that I have the discernment, insight, and knowledge of the disorder. I have searched a multitude of books and articles, talked with professionals in the field of psychology, and the fact remains that unless you have gone through a traumatic experience that leaves you with PTSD, it is very difficult to understand. To give potentially important information for the road ahead is difficult for a person who hasn't experienced this. I don't have all the answers, but I have gained much insight and awareness of what we face. I was not prepared to confront all of the different emotions one experiences, but have learned with diligence, persistence, and tenacity, you can walk this journey of healing and find success.
PTSD is real and is worthy of more attention and acceptance by society, Insurance Companies, the work place, and the people you share your life with. The stigmas, which seem to accompany Mental Health issues such as PTSD, need to be addressed and given the same consideration as physical conditions are.

Healing is an absence of fear. It is being reborn, a new beginning.
Healing is giving yourself permission to live.
Healing is a journey to the light.
Healing means I am defined by what I do now or do not do and who I am now; it is not being defined by what somebody else did or did not do to me.
Healing is allowing yourself the possibility of joy in your life.
Healing is waking up one day and choosing life.
Healing is being prepared for future adversity so you can roll with the punches.
Healing is learning to use the three most necessary bones in your body - your wishbone, your funny bone, and your backbone.
Well-being is attained by little and little, and nevertheless it is no little thing itself.....

As with the waterfall, it comes crashing down to the earth, bringing a powerful collision which then becomes, once again, a calm and peaceful river of life.
